The coolest thing about First Root Farm in Concord, MA (besides the hand-drawn zines they give out with their veggies) is its crew of female farmers! It’s currently managed by Laura Olive Sackton and Cheryl Nunes. They operate a CSA in Concord and Somerville, as well as a farm stand and pick-your-own program.
First Root Farm is part of a larger trend of women-owned or women-staffed farms around the country. Check out this 2013 article from Grist: Breaking the grass ceiling: On U.S. farms, women are taking the reins.
Also awesome is Pipeline Startups, an organization that connects female investors to socially minded, entrepreneurial women. They recently invested in Hip Chick Farms, a startup founded by Serafina Palandec and Jennifer Johnson.
